Ways To Recycle Soap Slivers
As a society, we’re all becoming more aware of the environmental impact our lifestyle has. This can include cutting down on plastic use, trying alternatives to meat and dairy or simply not wasting products and buying things we don’t need! Here at Shea Sassy, we’re passionate about doing everything we can to help protect our planet, which is why our cruelty free soap has recyclable packaging and we use natural bamboo in our soap sets.
Today we’re suggesting ways to make the most out of your toiletries at home in order to cut down on waste. Hopefully you can feel inspired on how to be more eco-friendly in your everyday life.
What is eco-friendly soap?
There are many ways that soap can be made or acquired more sustainably. Firstly, opt for a bar of soap in cardboard packaging which cuts out the need for a plastic bottle, which then will either end up in landfills, potentially polluting the oceans or need to be recycled at a specialist plant. An eco-friendly soap will also have minimal chemicals in it. The Shea Sassy soaps are all handmade with natural ingredients including carefully selected essential oils, which minimises the need for harsh chemicals. Good news for the planet, and your skin!
How to recycle soap slivers
When you’re nearing the end of your favourite bar of soap, you’ll get a little sliver of soap which will become frustratingly too difficult to use. Well, worry not because it is actually possible to reuse soap slivers to keep the soap lasting much longer!
It can be tempting to simply throw out any leftover bits of soap, but there are ways to recycle or reuse the soap, such as:
Save up soap slivers to melt together back into a usable bar of soap: Slowly melt soap pieces in a saucepan on a low heat on the hob with a small amount of water to create liquid soap which can be put into refillable soap dispensers, or pour into a greased mold and allow to cool for a new bar of soap!
Use soap slivers for crafts: If you’re into crafts or you’re a dab hand at mending clothing, a sliver of soap is always good to have in your kit for when you need to mark a discreet seam or a cutting line as it can easily wash off.
Add soap pieces to a washcloth for a ‘self-soaping scrubbie’: Take a muslin cloth or fine cotton flannel, pop your soap slivers in the centre and secure the edges of the cloth to create a scrubbie that lathers up nicely in the shower!
Ways to reduce waste at home
There are small steps we can all take to lessen our waste contribution at home, including:
Switching to bamboo toothbrushes: In the UK, approximately 260 million plastic toothbrushes are added to landfills every year. Bamboo toothbrushes can actually biodegrade down to nothing!
Champion plastic free grocery shopping: The big supermarkets are taking note of the demand for plastic free packaging on items such as fruit and veg, but there are some great independent zero waste shops sprouting up all over the country. Take your own glass jars or canvas bags for guilt-free stocking up.
Try bars of soap and shampoo bars over bottles: Not everything on the market is covered in unrecyclable plastic! Switch to high quality, naturally made hand soap, body wash and hair products to have an instantly more eco friendly bathroom.
Use up the whole product or use sparingly: Whether its cleaning products, food or using the last of your bar of soap until it can be reused, as suggested above, make an effort to get the very last drop or food eaten to reduce any household wastage.
